With only 5 days left to get our TRE45ON shirt from Cotton Bureau, we thought we’d take a moment to highlight the quote on the back in case you missed it.

We toyed with around 10 quote options before landing on the winner–a quote from an editorial written by Theodore Roosevelt, deep in the midst of World War I. Snopes’ fact-check provides a pretty good picture of the origin and context of the quote. The TL;DR is that while Roosevelt wasn’t against the war, he recognized the importance of critique and the dangers of blind allegiance. Considering our particular context, outlined in our first post about the shirt, we’re focusing on the latter of those points.

Full disclosure: our version of the quote is abbreviated. When designing a shirt, you want to get to the point quickly since you’re limited on space–comparable to the concept of Tweets. We kept as much of the original wording as we could, but clipped it just a bit in the interest of brevity.

The full quote:

“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”

Theodore Roosevelt

As designers, our team is accustomed to critique. We see it as not only valuable to the process of creating an end product that reaches its goals, but absolutely essential. Likewise, if a President is supposed serve and represent the many audiences in America, they cannot ignore public opinion and maintain democracy. The art we created makes our point clear: President Donald Trump has committed treason. It is important for Americans of all party affiliations to note this, to speak out against it, and to fight for a future that benefits us all.
